A bridal makeup trial is your chance to see how your wedding day look will come together, is a way for you to feel confident and beautiful when the big day arrives. But to make the most out of your trial, a little preparation goes a long way! Here’s everything you need to know about getting ready for your bridal trial from a professional makeup artist’s perspective.
1. Book Your Trial at the Right Time
Ideally, the best time for a bridal makeup trial is 2-3 months before your wedding. By this time, you likely have your dress, venue, and overall wedding aesthetic set, which will help us tailor your look perfectly. If you’re planning a destination wedding, consider booking a trial in the same season to see how the makeup wears in similar weather conditions.
2. Arrive with a Clean Face
One of the most important things you can do before your trial is to arrive without makeup or any skincare products. A fresh, exfoliated face is enough for us to start the trial. Don’t put any creams , SPF-s, or serums. Feel free to bring your skincare products with you, but let’s see togheter at the time of trial, if the products you use underneath makeup, will get along well with the makeup products I will use on you. What I am trying to avoid by this, is makeup that will peel of from your face or interract bad with our foundation, cream products and powders.
3. Wear White (or a Shade Similar to Your Dress)
Makeup looks different depending on what you’re wearing. A white or light-colored top will help you visualize how your makeup will complement your dress. This also gives a more realistic preview of your final bridal look. If you have a V neck dress, a off the shoulder dress – try to wear a similar shaped top.
4. Bring Inspiration Photos – But Be Realistic
Pinterest and Instagram are goldmines for bridal makeup inspiration, but it’s important to choose images that match your features, skin tone, and personal style. Make sure your photos are not AI or heavealy edited. If you love a smoky eye but usually wear minimal makeup, we might need to adjust the look to feel comfortable for you. Bring 3-5 inspiration photos that reflect the vibe you want, and I’ll help personalize the look to enhance your natural beauty.
5. Consider Your Wedding Details
Makeup isn’t just about the face—it should tie into your entire wedding aesthetic. Think about:
- Your Dress – Does it have romantic lace, modern lines, or vintage details? Your makeup should complement the style.
- Hair Style – A sleek bun vs. soft waves can change how we approach your makeup. If you are used with wearing your hair down all the time, chances are you are not gonna fell 100% yourself wearing a tight low bun for example.
- Jewelry & Accessories – Statement earrings vs. a delicate veil can influence the final look.
- Venue & Lighting – An outdoor beach wedding requires different makeup techniques than a candlelit ballroom event, so make sure you always mention details about your settings.
6. Be Honest About Your Likes & Dislikes
Your trial is the perfect time to speak up! Your artist will not feel offended, I promise.
If you’re not used to bold lips or heavy foundation, let me know so we can adjust accordingly. Don’t be afraid to give feedback—it’s much easier to tweak the look now than to feel uncomfortable on your wedding day, and we actually want to hear your honest opinion, always.
7. Test Longevity & Take Photos
After your trial, wear the makeup for some hours to see how it holds up. Take photos in natural light, indoor lighting to ensure it looks good in every setting. If you notice anything you’d like to adjust (like a lipstick shade or foundation finish), we can modify it before the wedding.
8. Plan for Touch-Ups on the Wedding Day
I always recommend having blotting papers, a small powder compact, and your chosen lipstick or gloss on hand. If you’re emotional (hello, happy tears!), waterproof mascara and setting spray are must-haves.
9. Book Hair & Makeup Together (If Possible)
If you’re getting both hair and makeup professionally done, try scheduling a hair trial on the same day. This way, you can see the complete bridal look and ensure everything works seamlessly together.
10. Trust the Process & Enjoy It!
Your bridal trial is a chance to feel pampered, experiment with different looks, and get excited for your big day. Trust your makeup artist’s expertise, communicate openly, and most importantly—have fun!
